Introducing: The Compassion Cafe
David’s birthday is February 26th. He’ll be 53.
I’ve heard some say it’s more appropriate to describe posthumous born days with a descriptor like “would’ve been.” But birthdays don’t change—they’re still the date, if known, someone entered this-here physical realm. Whether or not they’re present, in a bodily sense, to celebrate with us, this particular vital statistic remains the same.
In a spiritual sense, we’re allowed even more leeway. Just the thought of David brings him close. I feel him laughing with me when I remember things we both find funny.
All this said, this year, to honor David’s legacy, celebrate his birthday, bring people together, and continue his compassion mission, we’re launching the first official Compassion Cafe.
When is it? Monday, February 16th, from 10 am to noon.
Where is it? Cloud Forest Cafe at 222 D St in Davis, California.
What is it? Two hours to gather, share your definition of compassion electronically via tablet and/or a story of compassion via video, eat, drink, and make merry.
Why is it? We’re also supporting independent cafes, gathering community, raising awareness of compassion, and co-creating a kind and empathetic space.
How much is it? Zero, zilch, free. Thanks to our “angel investors”—kind, generous people invested in David’s mission—we’re able to cover the cost.
Come as you are, bring a friend, spend time with good people.
Plus, who knows? If Compassion Cafe gains traction, it can travel to other cities. Perhaps local Chambers of Commerce can provide a Compassion Map identifying places that have taken a Compassion Cafe Pledge of Kindness, which is in the works. Like-minded organizations could get on board—in other words, many possibilities!
For this inaugural event, Marisol Valdes at Davis Phoenix Coalition created an image you can share to get the word out. This sparked another idea: at future locations, working with a local artist to create a bespoke flyer that fits that community. Thank you, Marisol. 🙏🏼
Happy birthday, David.
With compassion,
Maria

I am so happy to hear of your initiative. I have felt connected to David ever since I heard his story. I live in Portland so I cannot come to your event but I would love to be part of bringing such a thing to Portland. Thank you for what you are doing for the world.
Beautiful and Sweet! Happy early b-day David!
